I'm not a rocket fan either, I'm just a basketball fan.

I think there's a good chance that Rockets can take the 5th seed but I'm not so sure if they can outrun the Mavericks.  It seems that the remaining schedule of the Rockets is a bit tougher than the Mavericks'.  Also, personally, I think the roster of the Mavericks is more complete and deeper.

Just my humble opinion ...

Actually, i think they are close if they could get a better pure PG and a PF who can get 8-10 rebounds each game, doesn't need to score a lot of points and does all the dirty works (yes, someone like Rodman would be perferct).  You know, Yao Ming really doesn't get that many rebounds for a person of his size and he is not particularly intimidating in his defense.
