Wesley Sneijder joins Real Madrid

Amsterdam, 12 aug 2007

Ajax and Real Madrid have reached agreement about the immediate transfer of Wesley Sneijder. The transfer fee for the 23-year old midfielder is 27 million euro.

Wesley Sneijder is an alumnus of the Ajax academy and made his debut in the first team at age 18, in the league match Willem II - Ajax (0-6) on 2 February 2003. The midfielder played 180 matches in Ajax 1 and scored 57 goals. In the 2006-2007 season, Sneijder played 47 official matches and scored 22 goals.

Sneijder has earned 35 caps for Holland and has scored 6 goals for the national team. In the most recent friendly Thailand - Holland (06-06-2007, 1-3), Sneijder provided all three assists.

,,We are proud that after Ryan Babel another player from our youth program has joined a European top club for a lot of money. Obviously we are sad that we have to miss one of our best players in the very important qualifying matches for the Champions League.
