Fergie eyes Italian market

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he plans to raid the Italian market this summer.

The Manchester United chief is fully aware of the recent events in Italy, with Fiorentina, Lazio and Juventus relegated to Serie B following the match-fixing trial.

Ferguson feels some of the clubs may look to loan out players for a season and will keep a close eye on developments.

The Scot is in the market for a holding midfielder and striker and there could well be options available to him in the coming weeks.

"It is something we are addressing," he said.

"At the moment, we are not exactly clear who is available and what the circumstances are.

"Some clubs might be looking at loan situations, believing they will get straight back into Serie A, so that is a possibility.

"But we also don't know whether players are available for sale or on free transfers."

Fabio Capello has confirmed his admiration for wantaway Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday that the Dutch hot shot had asked to leave Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy's request arrived following a turbulent end to last season which concluded with his walking out of the ground before the final game against Charlton Athletic.

The Red Devils appear resigned to selling the 30-year-old before the start of the new campaign, with reports suggesting the club want £15 million.

Bayern Munich have expressed an interest in the former PSV Eindhoven hit-man, while stories in Spain claim personal terms have already been agreed with Real.

New Real coach Capello has now admitted his liking for the predatory front man and believes van Nistelrooy has the credentials to be a big success at the Bernabeu.

"Van Nistelrooy is a footballer who has succeeded at all the clubs he has played for," Capello told As.

"He has scored a pile of goals.

"He is a forward who can succeed in Madrid."

Reports have also claimed that Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic was in England on Friday to try to broker a deal for van Nistelrooy.

Meanwhile, Capello has revealed he will halt his pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who was promised as a Real signing by new president Ramon Calderon.

Arsenal have steadfastly refused to sell the teenage midfielder and Capello has now resigned himself to looking elsewhere.

He added: "Cesc is not going to come into my plans. We are going to try to sign others."

Manchester United plan to offer veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar a one-year contract extension.

The Holland international has been a sturdy figure between the posts for United since joining from Fulham last summer.

He was an ever-present in The Premiership last season and has finally provided Sir Alex Ferguson with an able replacement for Peter Schmeichel.

Van der Sar's current contract is due to expire in 12 months' time, but Ferguson is hoping to squeeze another season out of the 35-year-old.

"Edwin has one more year left on his contract and we are looking to give him another one," said Ferguson.

"We have to pay attention to his age and it depends on how he does next season, but he was a terrific addition to our squad last year.

"His form was superb."

The former Ajax and Juventus keeper will be United's established number one for the new season, with Ferguson looking to bring in cover.

Tim Howard has been allowed to join Everton on a season-long loan, while Ben Foster is due to return to Watford for another year.

Ferguson is trying to sign Tomasz Kuszczak from West Bromwich Albion, although The Baggies remain reluctant to sell the Polish keeper.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be close to agreeing a deal to sign Turkish teenage sensation Nuri Sahin from Borussia Dortmund.
The 17-year-old has emerged as one of the finest young midfield players in the Bundesliga, and his goalscoring and playmaking have propelled him into the Turkish national team, where he has also excelled.
Although he is hardly a Roy Keane replacement, Sahin could provide some much-needed skill and craft to a United midfield that has seemed bereft of such qualities in recent months.
Dortmund are loath to lose a player of such quality, but their parlous financial state means that they may have to accept a bid that is lower than their valuation of the player, as they did in the case of Tomas Rosicky.

Rosicky joined Arsenal for a fee of around £7million, and reports suggest that United are looking to acquire Sahin for a similar amount.
