Hargreaves demands respect from Bayern

England midfielder Owen Hargreaves said Bayern Munich executives were aware of his continued interest in a transfer to Manchester United even if he realises they do not want to let him go home.

In an interview with Bild newspaper on Friday, Hargreaves said it was out of his hands whether the two clubs would be able to reach a deal by the Aug. 31 close of the transfer window but he made clear he has not given up hope of a transfer.

'I've given everything to Bayern Munich for the last nine years and I want to be treated with respect,' said Hargreaves, 25. 'I simply want it to be accepted that Manchester would be a great step for me.'

Canadian-born Hargreaves was voted England's best player at the World Cup finals in a poll by the Football Association.

He has been at Bayern since joining the club as a teenager in 1997 and his current contract runs through June 2010.

Bayern sporting director Uli Hoeness has criticised Hargreaves for publicly expressing his desire to go.

Hoeness has repeatedly rejected a reported offer of 25 million euros ($32 million) and said he wouldn't sell Hargreaves for 50 million euros.

'The manager doesn't want to let me go. That's his right,' said Hargreaves. 'But he knows exactly what I want.'

Asked by Bild if that was an immediate transfer, he said: 'It's simply a great challenge. I'm an England player, part of my family lives near Manchester. A lot of things come together.'

Hargreaves was hit with a 25,000-euro fine from Bayern this week for insubordination after he called the Manchester United offer 'simply fantastic'.

Hargreaves on Friday defended his decision to extend his contract last year to 2010 in Munich.

'It was a great honour for me at the time,' he said. 'In the meantime, a lot of things have developed for me in a different way. I have a great chance to become a key player for England.'

Hargreaves, whom Bayern hoped could fill a void left when Michael Ballack left for Chelsea, said he is not worried about being banished to the bench.

'The coach knows what I can do,' he said. 'And so do the fans. I always give everything I have. That won't change no matter where I play.'

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has threatened to report Manchester United to FIFA if they do not give up their pursuit of Hargreaves.

As Manchester United's first team worries mount, club captain Gary Neville has now been ruled out of England's next two Euro 2008 qualifiers.

The Red Devils were forced to make three changes for their trip to Charlton Athletic on Wednesday from the side which won so convincingly in the 5-1 season-opener against Fulham.

United won the game at The Valley comfortably in the end, but now face the next two games at Watford and at home to Tottenham Hotspur without three of their key men.

Inspirations Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes still have two more games to serve as part of their controversial suspensions, and The Red Devils have now lost their skipper through injury as well.

Neville has been struggling with a calf injury since returning from the World Cup and he broke down after just 45 minutes of the Cottagers game.

Sir Alex Ferguson has now ordered the right back to take a complete rest in the hope of a return for the UEFA Champions League game at home to Celtic on September 13.

That means he will miss Steve McClaren's first competitive games in charge of The Three Lions against Andorra and Macedonia in the first week of September.

The manager also revealed that centre back Nemanja Vidic had broken his wrist in training, although that should not prevent him linking up with the Serbia squad

Manchester United are watching Norway international Kristofer Haested.

The Premiership giants put the promising midfielder under the microscope on Thursday night during IK Start's Uefa Cup tie with Drogheda United.

The Red Devils sent their Irish scout Joe Corcoran to watch the youngster and he confirmed he had been instructed to run a check on Haested.

"I got a message from United's chief scout Jim Lawlor to go to exclusively track Haested," Corcoran told Faedrelandsvennen.

Though Start lost the game 1-0, the Norwegian outfit still progressed to the first round proper of the Uefa Cup after a tense penalty shoot-out victory.

Haested is thought to have impressed in the match and was delighted that his 'favourite club' had come to monitor his ability.

"I didn't know they were here, but it is, of course, nice that my favourite club are here to see me," said Haested.

"If they were impressed by what they saw here today, I don't know, but generally I'm a bit fed up with the all the speculation over professional players."

United had also watched Haested in international action last week when Norway drew 1-1 with Brazil in a game which also featured current Red Devils favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sir Alex Ferguson will now decide whether to bid for the central midfielder, or continue tracking his progress, with Start due to face Ajax in the first round of the Uefa Cup.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he is awaiting news from Bayern Munich regarding the possible transfer of Owen Hargreaves.

The England international reiterated his desire to move to The Premiership again on Friday but Bayern seem determined to hold onto the midfielder in an increasingly acrimonious transfer saga.

United have just six days to forge a deal before the transfer window closes, and as such have dispatched chief executive David Gill in a bid to find a resolution with their German counterparts.

The Red Devils have been publicly warned off continuing their pursuit for Hargreaves, who is a key player in the Bayern ranks, but Ferguson is not giving up on his quest to bring a second England international to Old Trafford after the capture of Michael Carrick this summer.

Whilst the Scot has no fresh news regarding any progress in the transfer as he awaits an update from Gill, who was in Monaco for the UEFA Champions League draw, the United boss stated that the Premiership club need Bayern to reveal their hand.

"We know what the situation is," Ferguson said on Sky Sports News.

"We really need for them to tell us what's happening.

"David [Gill] is in Monaco, I don't know whether he spoke to [Karl-Heinz] Rummenigge or [Uli] Hoeness.

"We're waiting to see where David is, if [he made] any progress himself yesterday.

"We'll wait and see what happens."

United are reportedly ready to spend £17 million to secure Hargreaves' signature, but Bayern have given no indication they are ready to lose the player who is contracted to the Allianz Arena until 2010.

Bayern Munich insist Owen Hargreaves will not be allowed to leave the club before his current contract expires in 2010.

Manchester United are trying frantically to tie up a deal for the England international before next Thursday's transfer deadline.

However, despite Hargreaves' desire to leave and United's keenness to land him - Bayern are refusing to budge.

"He is free to swap sides - but not before July 1, 2010," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Welt.

"This is the last word. If I say this, then that is what it is going to be.

"He can swap sides on July 1, 2010 - no sooner."

Rummenigge earlier this week stated that Bayern were considering taking United to Fifa over their pursuit, but he now says the English giants have backed off after talks with Red Devils chief executive David Gill.

"Manchester United have stopped their activities," he said.

"I have been in touch with my colleague David Gill and they stick to what we have agreed to. That is correct and serious."

Carlos Tevez's agent has claimed that his charge is nearing a move to England.

Chelsea have been leading the chase in recent months, but Manchester United and Arsenal are also both known to be keen.

Tevez fell out with his Brazilian club Corinthians at the weekend when he walked out following their game with Botafogo - claiming he would not play for them again.

Corinthians coach Emerson Leao has not been shy in condemning the Argentine striker - who looks as if he could be on his way to Europe.

Adrian Rucco, Tevez's agent, admitted a move to The Premiership was on the cards.

"Tevez is very close to moving to an English club," said Rucco.

A host of clubs from Europe are interested in Tevez, with Milan and Bayern Munich also linked.

But Corinthians director Humberto Grondona confirmed that they were under the impression Rucco was setting up a move to England.

"I am convinced that Carlos will go away to some European league," Grondona told La Nacion.

"His representative, Adrian Rucco, was in Rome three days ago and now he has gone to England to look for a club for him."

Reports in France have already stated that Rennes have made contact with Chelsea about the possibility of taking Tevez on loan, should The Blues sign him and decide to let him leave immediately
