Richardson Pens New Deal

Kieran Richardson has signed a four-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2009.

Richardson signed the deal at United's Carrington training base on Friday morning, on the day he celebrates his 21st birthday.

Kieran told ManUtd.com: "I am happy to commit my future to Manchester United, it’s the club where I want to be and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else."

The Greenwich-born player is primarily a midfielder but has gained recognition for his ability to adapt to the left-back role in place of the injured Gabriel Heinze in recent weeks.

He made his Reds debut three years ago, just two days after his 18th birthday, in the Champions League against Olympiakos.

However, before the start of this season, he was yet to make a Premiership start for the club.

The catalyst in his career came when he spent the latter part of last season on loan with struggling West Brom.

His mature performances in the centre of midfield for Bryan Robson's Baggies saw him return to United as a key member of Sir Alex's squad. The United manager noted upon his return: "Kieran went to West Brom and came back a man."

Edwin van der Sar is very happy with the way he has started his Manchester United career.

The 34-year-old Dutchman has been hugely impressive since his summer switch from Fulham, but he does not want to get carried away.

"Delighted? I don't usually use words like that," van der Sar told the Daily Telegraph.

"I'm not jumping over chairs or anything. I regard myself as a team player and want the team to do well. On that point, Blackburn [a 2-1 home defeat] was difficult to take, otherwise I am happy with the way it's gone."

Van der Sar feels United are suffering because of their expanding injury list.

"We've had a lot of injuries and a lot of players who have played a lot of matches," he said.

"We don't have too many substitutes who can change things around at the moment.

"So those playing have to perform and hold on until the injured and suspended players come back.

"We must lose the least amount of points possible until the Chelsea game at the beginning of November.

"Nobody at United is satisfied at the moment. That's a good thing, because if you're satisfied with third position in the league and drawing two out of three in the Champions League, that's not good.

"We want to perform a lot better and show the extra quality we can bring to a game and dictate it more."
