Pat Riley became head coach in NYK on 91-92 season
that's impossible for your info.

He was the head coach in LA Lakers on 88-89 season
cos I remember LA was crushing by Detriot Pistons in Finals as that's the last year for Kareem Abudl-Jabber as he was 42 years old.

Magic Johnson and Bryon Scott were injured in Finals.

By the way, I never say about who are the great coaches in NBA.

There are few in my mind, of cos, some of them, they are in Hall of Fame nowadays:

1) Chuck Daly ( I don't need to explain this coach, right?)
2) Ernie Brickerstaff (can you expect Charlotte could play this good ... with this group of players?)
3)Mauice Cheeks (well, excpet last year, Portland players' "suicide" themselves, he is a good coach to guide this group of people)
4) Nate McMillian, He's a good coach to teach the youth players, i.e. he's best, suitable person to guide Portland now, you will see there will be more new players in Portland soon.
