Sevilla Reject Arsenal's Baptista Bid

Sevilla have rejected a €12million bid from Arsenal for Julio Baptista, but they expect the Gunners to return with a higher offer during the next few days.
The Brazilian attacking midfielder is being touted by numerous clubs, but Arsenal were the first to make a formal offer when vice-chairman David Dein travelled to the Andalucian outfit last Thursday.

Sevilla president, José María del Nido, immediatly declined the opening bid of €9million up front with a further €3million to be paid after several clauses are activated in the player’s contract.

But just like they did when Valencia made a formal offer for defender Sergio Ramos two weeks ago, Sevilla said no and are determined to hang onto their stars.

Arsenal could well point out the new ruling that players over the age of 23 that have been at a club for longer than three years can be transfered for less than their buy-out clause if that sum is unrealistic.

The amount is then decided by an independent tribunal, but the Spanish club are ready to chance their arm this summer as Baptista has only been at the club two years.

If Sevilla do decide to sit tight, then they risk losing the former Sao Paulo player for a lot less than the Highbury club are currently offering.
