Manchester United came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 in a Greater Manchester derby at JJB Stadium on Monday evening.
It may have been another United victory over Wigan, both previous encounters this season ending in 4-0 wins to the Reds, but the outcome of this one was in doubt until the very last minute.
Wigan took the lead in the 60th minute through Paul Scharner only to see United hit back through Cristiano Ronaldo fourteen minutes later. The game appeared to be heading for an honourable draw, but with seconds of added time remaining Wigan defender Pascal Chimbonda put through his own net to give United the points.
The victory eased the Reds back into the Premiership’s second spot, two points ahead of Liverpool with one game in hand.
Sir Alex Ferguson named precisely the same squad to that which was selected when the teams met in the Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium eight days before. And it was exactly the same format with Louis Saha keeping his place as the team’s main striker ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was again amongst United’s five substitutes.
Wigan showed two changes from their big-day out in the Welsh capital. Mike Pollitt, three years an apprentice and professional at Old Trafford, was missing after the hamstring injury he picked up in the final had failed to clear up. John Filan, who took Pollitt’s place early in that game, continued in goal for Wigan with Gary Walsh, another former Red named as substitute keeper. The other change in the Latics side was Lee McCulloch for Stephane Henchoz.
The match was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Paratrooper Lee Ellis who recently became another sad statistic of the Iraq conflict. Ellis, 23, from Wythenshawe, spent two years as an apprentice goalkeeper with Wigan Athletic.
United were making there first ever trip to the JJB Stadium for a competitive fixture, although they did visit six and a half years ago – 4 August 1999 – to help commemorate the official opening of Wigan’s new headquarters. United won that game 2-0 with goals from Paul Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It was a chilly, but dry evening, in Wigan on the western extremes of Greater Manchester’s urban sprawl when the game began with United defending the North Stand, the area of the stadium where their supporters were located. |
