Reds agree Smith sale



Manchester United have confirmed that a fee has been agreed with Newcastle United for the services of England striker Alan Smith, who is believed to have undergone a medical at St James' Park on Thursday.

Magpies manager Sam Allardyce is keen to tie up a deal for the 26-year-old, who has been linked away from Old Trafford all summer, but concedes Smith still has options to mull over.

Allardyce told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: "I am hoping that the Alan Smith deal will go through. He has other clubs to consider and I am hoping we are top of his list."

The England striker moved to Old Trafford from Leeds United in 2004 for £7million, and has scored 12 goals in 93 Reds appearances.

Ronaldo injury fears allayedThe omission of Cristiano Ronaldo from United's squad to face Glentoran on Wednesday is merely a precautionary measure against a minor ankle injury.

The Portuguese winger had been expected to line up against the Glens at the Oval, but was conspicuous by his absence as the Reds flew to Belfast on Wednesday morning.

A Club spokesman told ManUtd.com: "Cristiano has been left out of tonight’s friendly against Glentoran with a slight ankle knock. He was left in Manchester as a precaution.

"He will train on Friday and is expected to be fit for Sunday’s game against Reading."
