Kaiser's United snub
Franz Beckenbauer says that a move to Manchester United or Milan would be a sideways step for Michael Ballack.
Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to bring the 29-year-old to Old Trafford as a tailor-made replacement for Roy Keane, although the German's financial demands may yet prove to be a major stumbling block.
Ballack, who will be out of contract in the summer, is reportedly demanding wages totalling £25 million over a five-year period - a package that would see him earning £5 million-a-year as his career enters its twilight years.
The two sides will now look for common ground as they try to hammer out a deal after Bayern rubber-stamped their captain's departure by withdrawing their latest contract offer.
But the Bavarian club's experienced president believes that a move to United would not serve to enhance Ballack's career, advising him instead to look at the option of joining Spanish giants Real Madrid.
"Much as I want him to stay, I feel he will probably leave," said Beckenbauer.
"If he does, the decision only makes sense if he goes to Real Madrid.
"I know United and Milan are also in the hunt, but Michael will only be improving himself by going to Madrid.
"Anywhere else and it will not be a step up." |
