'When I asked the doctor at half-time whether or not he could continue, he said he couldn't'

Chelsea's goalkeeper Petr Cech is undergoing a scan at the club's training ground in Cobham, with fears growing that he may need surgery on a calf muscle injury which could keep him out of action for a month.

The injury was sustained during last night's match against Schalke when Cech was challenged by Gerald Asamoah at a first-half corner. As he dropped the ball he pulled his right calf muscle and club doctors decided he should be replaced at half-time by reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini. Cech left the ground on crutches before flying home from Germany with the team late last night.

When asked after the game about Cech's injury, the Chelsea manager Avram Grant was non-committal. "I don't know how serious it is," he said. "All I know is that, when I asked the doctor at half-time whether or not he could continue, he said he couldn't."

If Cech is required to have surgery it will be another major defensive blow for Chelsea, who currently have John Terry, Paulo Ferreira and Ashley Cole all sidelined.
